As we observe Black History Month this February, I am excited to embrace this year's theme "African Americans and Labor." This theme highlights the vital role of labor of the Black experience, from the struggles of enslaved Africans to the leadership of Black individuals in our nation, across unions and those advocating for rights and justice.
The theme recognizes the importance of Black experience, educators, and entrepreneurs who have shaped our society. It also underscores the invaluable contributions of Black workers at places like Picatinny Arsenal, who have played a crucial role from World War I to the present day. Their dedication and hard work have significantly impacted the defense industry and our community. Films such as "The Six Triple Eight" and "Hidden Figures" highlight the achievements of Black females who shined in their careers when others thought their lights were dimmed, showcasing innovation and the contributions of remarkable STEM professionals, Military leaders and those who educated them like Mary McLeod Bethune, Jeanne Noble and Fanny C. Williams and others who paved the way for future generations. Let's also celebrate those in our chapter for all they have accomplished and continue to inspire us today.
I encourage you to reflect on the intersections between the work of African Americans and the broader narrative of American labor history. Engaged yourself in community events, educational forums, and discussions with family and friends will enhance your understanding and appreciation of these contributions.
Let us come together to celebrate and honor the resilience, creativity, and achievements of African Americans. Your participation in local events can amplify the recognition of these crucial donations.
Thank you for your commitment to honoring Black History Month and the remarkable legacy it represents.
Best regards,
Dr. Dion Serben President Women in Defense, Picatinny Chapter
